# Overview

The Digital Collection platform (“platform”) presents a website defined by a simple structure of a top level site, which contains a number of collections. Each collection has it’s own descriptive page which can include images, videos to tell the user about the collection or maybe tell a story.

Within a Collection, the concept of an Item is like digital representation of a physical object, e.g. a book, manuscript or a map. The mapping of Items into Collections are arbitrary - such that an Item can belong in multiple Collections, e.g. Darwin’s note book can be part of a “Darwin themed collection” or be part of “Beautiful hand written works”. For example, at Cambridge [Treasures of the Library](https://cudl.lib.cam.ac.uk/collections/treasures) is a collection of a variety of special items including [Chinese Oracle Bones](https://cudl.lib.cam.ac.uk/view/MS-CUL-00001-00155/1) with a 3D model, and the [al-Qurʼān](https://cudl.lib.cam.ac.uk/view/MS-NN-00003-00075/1) which is also in the [Islamic Manuscripts](https://cudl.lib.cam.ac.uk/collections/islamic/1) collection.

The platform is designed around a simple concept of publishing a set of files that defines the entire site, from the top level page, to the “Collections” and then the “Items” with their associated Images, metadata and scholarly research materials.
